The Italian PhD program at Johns Hopkins University focuses on three interconnected fields: literary history, detailed textual examination, and interpretive theory, concentrating on changing literacy cultures—from manuscript studies and book history to performance, film, and digital media. PhD candidates may also pursue interdisciplinary specializations combining other languages, literatures, and humanities fields.
Pedagogical training and classroom experience form a core component of the Italian graduate curriculum. Except during the first and fourth years, all degree candidates must complete supervised teaching. Beyond language courses, teaching opportunities include leading the undergraduate Italian Journeys survey, designing intersession/summer courses (including for-credit offerings), and participating in the Dean's Teaching Fellowship program.
