The SBI program provides interdisciplinary education for scientists and public health professionals seeking to incorporate social science approaches into creating, executing, and assessing public health initiatives, especially those rooted in communities. A hallmark of the program is its integration of both qualitative and quantitative research techniques. Participants gain expertise in survey methodologies, unstructured in-depth interviews, facilitated group discussions, observational techniques, socio-environmental mapping, and digital tools for handling and interpreting both numerical and narrative data. The curriculum additionally explores topics like gender's influence on health outcomes, community engagement in health initiatives, and cultural/environmental determinants impacting worldwide health.
