The Epidemiology doctoral program is rooted in public health and population-based research. Candidates employ epidemiological techniques to investigate intricate health challenges. The PhD curriculum includes two years of classes followed by a minimum of two years dedicated to research. Teaching preparation is mandatory, with students serving as assistants for both methodological and subject-specific courses. Requirements also encompass a written comprehensive exam, mock oral examination, preliminary assessment, various presentation formats, and a culminating dissertation with defense. The General Epidemiology and Methodology pathway caters to those pursuing generalist or methodological careers by providing comprehensive training. This track offers specializations in Advanced Methodology or Pharmacoepidemiology, or permits customized study plans through an individualized option. Close collaboration with advisors helps tailor coursework to individual goals. Suggested classes include epidemiology, statistics, and bioscience offerings. Faculty across the department can guide students in the General Epidemiology track, while those focusing on Methodology are strongly advised to pursue the Biostatistics MHS degree. First-year scholars concentrate on core curriculum mastery and comprehensive exam success. Departmental seminars, journal discussions, and research meetings complement coursework by addressing contemporary epidemiological issues. Second-year students begin identifying research projects with faculty mentors, many of whom direct prestigious studies like CKID, MACS, and WIHS, or collaborate on environmental biomarker research with Environmental Health Sciences colleagues.
