Our Doctoral Program draws an accomplished group of students from varied disciplines, spanning medicine, science, and history. The PhD curriculum equips them for academic careers in education, research, and policymaking. Jointly supported by two departments, candidates apply to, join, and complete their degree in either History of Medicine or History of Science and Technology while taking classes across both fields. Through a partnership with the School of Public Health, we provide a dual-degree option: the PhD in History of Medicine/MHS in International Health for Public Health students, along with a reciprocal PhD in International Health/MA in History of Medicine.
Graduate course offerings include comprehensive surveys, research seminars, specialized reading courses, and personalized tutorials. Every student acquires hands-on teaching experience as undergraduate teaching assistants, with advanced students frequently earning Dean's Teaching Fellowships to create and instruct their own undergraduate classes.
