Physics explores the fundamental principles governing our universe and the interactions between energy and matter. It spans investigations from the tiniest quantum particles to the vast cosmic evolution of the cosmos itself. More than just acquiring scientific knowledge, physics cultivates a problem-solving mindset—whether probing the mysteries within a proton or applying insights from biology, chemistry, or geology to address real-world challenges.
At JMU, physics students can tailor their academic journey to align with personal interests and professional aspirations. Our curriculum covers diverse physics disciplines such as materials science, computational physics, electronics, and applied nuclear physics. We strongly encourage undergraduates to collaborate with faculty on research initiatives, frequently leading to conference presentations and joint publications. The physics and astronomy department also provides numerous paid research positions for hands-on experience.
