The SoMAS faculty primarily concentrate on foundational research aimed at deepening our knowledge of coastal ocean and atmospheric processes. They are equally dedicated to applying research findings to tackle environmental issues stemming from human activity. SoMAS encompasses specialized institutes in key fields: the Institute for Terrestrial and Planetary Atmospheres, the Living Marine Resources Institute, the Institute for Ocean Conservation Science, the Long Island Groundwater Resource Institute, and the Waste Reduction and Management Institute. These institutes significantly enrich educational and research opportunities.
Undergraduate students at SoMAS can pursue majors in atmospheric and oceanic sciences, environmental studies, marine sciences, and marine vertebrate biology, along with minors in environmental studies and marine sciences. Refer to the individual listings for environmental studies (ENS), marine sciences (MAR), and marine vertebrate biology (MVB) in the Approved Majors, Minors, and Programs section. Additionally, SoMAS provides collaborative programs with departments in the College of Arts and Sciences (Chemistry, Biology, and Geosciences) and the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (Chemical and Molecular Engineering).
