The Animal Science Undergraduate Program aims to equip graduates with the ability to articulate the interdependent relationship between animals and humans, solve intricate challenges in animal enterprise management, and implement their expertise within a technologically advanced global society. Our alumni will possess expertise in sustainable animal production methods that prioritize animal welfare and responsible natural resource management.
The learning objectives for Animal and Dairy Science majors require that graduates demonstrate proficiency in:
Implementing science-backed approaches for the oversight, handling, and research of domesticated animals and their byproducts.
Effectively conveying information through both spoken and written communication.
Analyzing current domestic and international factors influencing animal science.
Collaborating effectively within teams or assuming leadership roles to accomplish collective objectives.
Employing strategies for continuous personal and professional development.
Assessing how animal management techniques affect economic, social, and environmental sustainability.
The department provides Bachelor of Science degrees in both Animal Science and Dairy Science. Students cannot pursue a dual major in both animal and dairy science, but may combine either with other academic programs. Degree requirements allow up to 6 credits each for Intercollegiate Judging (Animal Science 475) or independent study courses (490 series), and a maximum of 4 credits for Undergraduate Teaching Experience (Animal Science 497). Students can pursue minors in Animal Science or Meat Science, along with specialized certificates in Beef Cattle, Dairy Cattle, Swine, Poultry, and Equine management. Both animal and dairy science programs support preparatory coursework for veterinary school and other professional programs while fulfilling bachelor's degree requirements. The department offers combined BS/MS programs in Animal Science and a BS/MBA option. Students may also participate in the Midwest Poultry Consortium and Swine Science Online program for specialized training in poultry and swine production.
