The Master of Arts in Teaching Spanish program caters to current and aspiring Spanish educators.

This M.A.T. curriculum delivers advanced studies in Spanish language, Hispanic cultures, pedagogical approaches, applied linguistics, and Hispanic arts and literature. It enhances Spanish instructors' professional growth by refining their linguistic and instructional abilities while supporting career progression.

The program structure prepares participants with expertise in second-language learning theories, effective teaching strategies, and significant cultural expressions through literature.

Participants will grasp how language interacts with society in Spanish-speaking communities and how linguistic studies (including literature, culture, and translation) intersect with other fields. They'll utilize their linguistic and cultural understanding to excel as educators.

Program alumni will subsequently enhance Spanish instruction in educational settings, boosting students' language proficiency and cultural competence.

Qualification Requirements

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 grading scale) in the student's undergraduate major. An Undergraduate degree in Spanish is expected, but related degrees are also considered (additional coursework may be required).
Official transcripts showing a bachelor's degree has been conferred.
Proficiency in the Spanish language. There are two options:
By examination: Attaining a score of Nivel Intermedio (B2) on the Diplomas de Espaol como Lengua Extranjera (DELE = Diplomas of Spanish as a Foreign Language) issued by the Spanish Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport.
The applicant may submit an oral sample of 10-15 minutes of spontaneous speech in Spanish AND an essay in Spanish on some aspect of Spanish culture, literature, linguistics or pedagogy.
Three letters of recommendation. At least 2 should be from professors.

TOEFL iBT of 79-99 or IELTS of 6.5-7.0 will take the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) placement test. Admitted students with Duolingo scores (min. accepted score - 110) will also be required to take the EAP placement test.
