The Biology Ph.D. program is a Purdue University degree administered through the Department of Biology.
This Doctor of Philosophy program demands completion of 90 credit hours, representing the most advanced degree awarded by Purdue University's Biology Department at IUPUI. Admission is limited to candidates who have shown exceptional academic capability in an established field. With a strong emphasis on research, the program concludes with a substantive thesis that demonstrates the student's capacity for independent investigation within their chosen specialization.
The curriculum combines structured coursework, specialized independent study, supplementary subjects as determined by the advisory committee, and original research leading to a thesis. Graduates from the Biology Department's Ph.D. program have successfully pursued post-doctoral opportunities and secured academic appointments at recognized universities or research roles in corporate and governmental settings.
Students must hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution of higher learning and demonstrate good preparation in the following subjects: Biological Sciences, Organic Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics.
GPA: A minimum graduation grade-point index of 3.0 or equivalent is required for unconditional admission. An undergraduate GPA of 3.0 does not guarantee admission. Applicants with GPAs of 3.0 or slightly above will be expected to have a science course GPA of 3.0
All non-native speakers of English must also submit proof of English proficiency unless the applicant has a Bachelor's degree or higher from the US or a predominantly English-speaking country.

English Proficiency Requirements: International students must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).
The minimum scores required for admission are 600 on the paper-based test, 250 on the computer-based test, or 80 on the internet-based test (foreign students only).
