The Geobiology specialization within GPS brings together researchers and students studying the interactions between living systems and Earth's physical processes. Our investigations cover vast timescales, from life's origins and development on the primitive Earth to its presence in extraordinary extreme habitats and its influence on contemporary biogeochemical systems. This research frequently crosses traditional disciplinary lines, integrating geology, geochemistry, environmental studies, microbiology, and genetic science. We provide both bachelor's degree options and doctoral programs. Graduates and postdoctoral researchers pursue academic careers across biological and Earth sciences, as well as positions in diverse industries including pharmaceutical development, genetic research, and medical fields. Caltech's geobiology researchers address these fundamental questions by studying present-day organisms, tracing evolutionary relationships, and analyzing geological evidence.

Qualification Requirements
Applicants must have completed a bachelor's degree or the equivalent before beginning graduate study. Applicants who already hold a Ph.D. degree will not be considered for a second Ph.D. degree. Transcripts from each college or university attended, three letters of recommendation, a CV, and the applicant's statement of purpose are required components of the application and are carefully and equally weighed during the evaluation process.
There is no minimum requirement for the English proficiency exams. However, all new students who have had limited instruction in English will participate in a one-on-one English evaluation with the ESL instructor during Orientation and may be asked to enroll in an English as a Second Language (ESL) course.
