The Bachelor of Science in Forensic and Investigative Sciences is a Purdue University program offered through its specialized Forensic and Investigative Sciences curriculum.
Forensic science applies scientific techniques and methodologies to criminal investigations and public legal matters. This interdisciplinary program integrates biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, criminal justice, and legal studies, training students to investigate crimes and resolve legal disputes. Professionals in this field analyze complex evidence, serve as expert witnesses, and occasionally assist with crime scene investigations.
This degree program was collaboratively designed by Purdue's School of Law, School of Science, and School of Public and Environmental Affairs. Students select between two specialization tracks: biology or chemistry.
Success in our forensic program demands strong mathematical, scientific, and writing skills. The field also requires emotional resilience when confronting challenging crime scenes involving violence or loss of life, necessitating professional composure in difficult circumstances.
Students may pursue faculty-supervised internships at accredited crime laboratories or related organizations. Common internship sites include forensic labs, medical examiner offices, police departments, and private research facilities, typically involving hands-on research projects.
