Since its establishment in 1875, teacher training has been IUP's foundational purpose. The Normal School and its Model School were created to simultaneously advance knowledge and teaching excellence as interconnected objectives. Through twelve decades of evolution, IUP has consistently upheld its dedication to both exceptional learning and teaching. While the university has significantly grown, the College of Education and Communications carries on the legacy of developing exceptional educators for all learners.
IUP's Teacher Education offerings encompass twenty-two entry-level certification programs and eleven advanced programs. Fifteen of the beginner programs are administered by departments from the university's five other academic divisions.
Renowned for its experiential learning approach, the college engages over five hundred students in early fieldwork each term. Approximately five hundred candidates annually complete a full semester of guided teaching in public schools. Students are urged to explore diverse opportunities in both urban and rural environments with varied cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
