This program enhances undergraduate education for high-achieving biology majors and aligns with all our degree tracks except Environmental Health.
Our top students frequently engage in faculty-led research, and this program formally acknowledges and incorporates such work into their academic journey. The Biology Honors Program especially benefits students pursuing research careers or planning to attend graduate/professional schools.
Sophomores with a minimum 3.25 GPA after their third semester will receive program invitations. Applications require transcripts and a personal statement detailing academic objectives, career aspirations, and reasons for pursuing honors status. The department's honors committee will admit up to 12 students annually.
Accepted students complete BIOL 484 Honors Seminar in their junior year, two semesters of BIOL 483 Honors Thesis/Independent Study, and one advanced biology course. Their thesis research, conducted under faculty supervision in their chosen specialization, must be approved by a three-member committee (including at least one external member).
Prospective participants should consult advisors early to maintain the required GPA and prepare sophomore-year applications. While open to all qualified biology majors, the program particularly advantages those planning graduate/professional studies. Honors designations appear on official transcripts, and program completers receive special recognition at departmental graduation events.
