Our department offers a vibrant sound design program, presenting an excellent option for an M.F.A. minor. Each year, IU Theatre and Dance stages a diverse lineup of plays, musicals, and dance performances, alongside multiple student productions. This wealth of opportunities enables graduate students to acquire hands-on sound design and audio engineering experience while focusing on their primary studies. Students collaborate with accomplished directors, music directors, and choreographers who challenge them to excel. Coursework delivers comprehensive training in acoustics, audio system configuration, recording methods, microphone usage, sound design principles, and advanced exploration of how music and sound effects enhance theatrical storytelling. Serving as a sound designer for our productions lets students put classroom-taught design and engineering concepts into practice.
