Our institution houses one of the world's premier jazz studies programs, where students thrive in an exceptionally creative and cooperative environment. We provide both bachelor's and master's degree programs that comprehensively prepare students in all facets of jazz performance and teaching. This includes training in improvisation, historical context, arrangement/composition, ensemble performance (both small and large groups), rhythm section methods, individual instrument instruction, recording techniques, vocal jazz, and teaching methodologies. Students learn from distinguished faculty with remarkable performance backgrounds and academic achievements. Our jazz studies department features internationally recognized educators, published authors, acclaimed composers, Grammy Award recipients, NEA honorees, Pulitzer Prize winners, and Jazz Masters.
The Music Education program offers specialized degrees in choral instruction, general music education, band instrumental teaching, and string instrumental teaching. Specific descriptions of
these music education specializations can be found in the respective curriculum sections. All undergraduate music degrees require completion of at least 120 credit hours (excluding I400 and major ensemble requirements). Certain degree programs may have additional credit hour requirements due to specialized coursework.
