Geographic Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) are fast-expanding specialized disciplines used in environmental science, national security, demographics, intelligence, forestry, disaster evaluation, environmental management, climate studies, urban development, criminal justice, food systems, and agriculture, among other sectors. Indiana University's Geography department serves as the primary center for Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing education at the Bloomington campus. The program covers foundational knowledge, theoretical principles, and technical competencies in global positioning systems (GPS), digital cartography, image interpretation (from satellite and aerial sources), geo-visualization techniques, and spatial modeling across various disciplines. Graduates from this specialization pursue careers as GIS/RS experts in roles such as environmental analysts, urban developers, academic instructors, market researchers, map designers, GIS library specialists, emergency management coordinators, and watershed/forestry investigators.
