Illinois State University's School of Biological Sciences maintains a distinguished history of educating future biology instructors. The comprehensive curriculum combines professional education classes with hands-on biology laboratory work. Graduates earn certification to instruct all secondary-level science subjects (including biology, physics, chemistry, and earth science), along with Advanced Placement and honors biology courses. With strong focus on research and innovative teaching techniques, the program thoroughly equips students for careers in both educational and laboratory environments. Participants develop skills to manage high school science labs and teach in diverse community settings, from rural to urban schools. Practical classroom training begins in the second year, ensuring excellent preparation for student teaching assignments. Additional teaching opportunities are available through Undergraduate Teaching Assistant positions in introductory lab courses. Seniors may participate in extended internships at Professional Development Schools.
