Our nationally recognized German Teacher Education program equips graduates for K-12 instruction while providing an engaging interdisciplinary exploration of German-speaking cultures. Students can analyze literature, investigate fairy tales or contemporary music lyrics, and stay informed about current EU developments. The curriculum helps learners reach Advanced-Low or superior language proficiency, enhanced by study abroad opportunities in Paderborn or Bonn. Extracurricular programs through the German Club and German Honor Society further develop conversational abilities and cultural understanding. This major develops essential teaching competencies for K-12 environments, with practical pedagogical training that prepares future educators to work with diverse student populations. The combination of academic study and hands-on classroom experience ensures graduates are well-equipped for modern educational challenges. Program completers earn certification to teach German in Illinois K-12 schools and 32 reciprocal states. Employment prospects remain strong, with school administrators frequently contacting our Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Department seeking qualified German instructors.
