The Barnard Education Program is dedicated to enhancing public education and tackling challenges of fairness and social justice, especially in city schools. We provide three educational pathways: Educational Studies, Urban Teaching-Elementary/Childhood Education, and Urban Teaching-Secondary/Adolescent Education. Through these programs, students gain a critical perspective on public education challenges and explore strategies to advance equitable and inclusive approaches for every child in our public schools. The program welcomes all Columbia undergraduates (BC, SEAS, GS, CC) who aspire to become certified teachers, work with youth in social service organizations, or pursue education-related careers.
This interdisciplinary major is designed for students seeking to comprehend, critically examine, and investigate education's societal impact. Those who choose the Educational Studies major develop skills to assess educational policies, practices, and research with a focus on equity and justice. Our alumni are equipped to drive positive change for peace, justice, and sustainability across diverse educational settings worldwide.
