The Doctor of Philosophy degree is awarded for demonstrated competence in independent research and academic excellence within a specialized discipline. While primarily emphasizing research rather than credit accumulation, certain coursework must be completed. Ph.D.-level Microbiology training requires substantial grounding in Mathematics, Chemistry, Genetics, Molecular Biology, and Biochemistry, complemented by comprehensive studies across Microbiology's diverse branches. Students then deepen their expertise through advanced courses in Microbiology's core areas (including Molecular Biology, Biochemistry and Physiology, Genetics, Biotechnology, Virology, Industrial and Environmental Microbiology, and Medical Microbiology) while concentrating on their chosen specialization.

Qualification Requirements
In addition to the Graduate School Admission requirements, acceptance into the Microbiology Ph.D. program requires:
A suitable faculty advisor
GPA of 3.0 or above for all upper division course credits taken in the last degree-earning program
Competitive GRE General Test scores (verbal and quantitative sections in the 40th percentile or higher and analytical writing score of at least 3.5)
Applicants who hold only a B.S. degree require a GPA of 3.0 or above in all undergraduate coursework and GRE General Test scores in the 50th percentile or higher for verbal and quantitative sections
Toefl Internet-based test (iBT): a total score of 80 with a score of at least 20 on each Section, Computer-based test: a total score of 213 with a score of at least 21 on Section 1 (Listening Comprehension) on the computer test, Toefl Paper-based test: a total score of 550 with a score of at least 55 on Section l (Listening Comprehension) on the paper test. Satisfactory IELTS performance for Classified admission includes scoring 6.5 or higher on the total band score. Photocopies of TOEFL and/or IELTS scores will not be accepted.
