Our BA program provides an extensive curriculum in Sociology. The Sociology BA is a broad-based degree without a specific concentration. To earn an ISU Sociology BA, students must complete core courses including Introduction to Sociology, Classical Social Theory, Sociological Methods, Social Statistics, Contemporary Sociological Theory, and Power, Class, and Prestige. Additionally, they can select from numerous electives to fulfill the 36-credit major requirement. Our department offers challenging courses spanning diverse subject areas.

Those pursuing the BA can incorporate specialized Criminology coursework to satisfy the 39-credit requirements typical of a Criminology degree.

BA in Sociology Learning Outcomes

Grasp and implement fundamental sociological theories.
Comprehend how sociologists employ scientific methods to collect data, evaluate findings, and draw preliminary conclusions.
Critically examine structures of power and privilege within our diverse global community while recognizing inequality's impacts.
Utilize sociological frameworks and research approaches to address local challenges.

Our interconnected programs in Sociology, Social Work, and Criminology collectively support the College of Arts and Letters' mission while fostering cross-departmental cooperation. We emphasize research, practical application, and community engagement. Communities significantly influence individuals' lives and provide a lens for examining health disparities, social stratification, and justice systems. This community focus highlights Sociology's societal relevance, establishes Social Work's specialization in child welfare, aging studies, and LGBTQ+ issues, and positions Criminology's importance in offender rehabilitation and community reintegration. The DHHS Healthy People 2020 initiative guides our qualitative/quantitative research, theoretical development, and grant-seeking efforts.
