Howard University's Graduate School offers a Ph.D. in Communication, Culture and Media Studies for candidates possessing a master's degree (M.A., M.F.A. or M.S.) from various disciplines such as social sciences, humanities, fine arts, and communication-related fields. This program fosters an interdisciplinary, multicultural perspective for examining communication challenges at local, national, and international levels. Students explore theoretical frameworks spanning multiple domains, including critical media studies, visual culture, sociology, history, science and technology studies, anthropology, and political economy. Graduates emerge equipped for diverse career paths, including postdoctoral research, academic faculty positions, and high-level communications roles in both public and private organizations. The curriculum highlights critical perspectives and diverse research methodologies in communication studies, incorporating quantitative and qualitative approaches, discourse analysis, network studies, semiotics, critical theory, and ethnographic research. Students can specialize in one of three concentrations: health communication, media and cultural studies, or technology, policy, and society. The program features a collaborative environment with dedicated faculty mentorship, supported by faculty engaged in groundbreaking research across various areas such as health communication, media policy, strategic communication, cultural history, media economics, intercultural communication, and the intersection of global activism with art and media.
