The Communication Arts and Sciences graduate program at Penn State educates students in communication science and rhetorical studies, focusing on areas like political discourse, health messaging, interpersonal interactions, public speaking, rhetorical analysis, and cultural rhetoric. Our graduate researchers explore how communication shapes opinions and actions, relationship and family patterns, civic engagement and collective memory, democratic processes, and movements for equality. According to the 2021 URAP rankings, Penn State ranked among the top three institutions in language, culture, and communication studies.
A key objective of our department is to advance understanding of communication's impact across personal, community, national, global, and cultural contexts. To achieve this, we actively encourage graduate students and scholars from all backgrounds, identities, and viewpoints to join our community. We honor each person's ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, nationality, physical/mental abilities, and political views. We uphold everyone's right to self-identification and to choose the terminology that most accurately reflects their identity.
A student must have completed the master's degree before being admitted as a doctoral student.
