Biological physics research encompasses studies of neural networks and biomedical physics. The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Howard University aims to achieve national and global recognition for excellence in physics research and education while ensuring African American students and other underrepresented groups have opportunities to excel in physics. The Department began awarding Master of Science degrees in the 1930s and introduced its Doctor of Philosophy program in the 1960s. Its graduate program objectives are: 1. To become the nation's top producer of African American physics PhDs, and 2. To establish itself as the leading program of its size in specific physics specialties. Biological physics research focuses on neural networks and biomedical physics applications.
