This cross-disciplinary program caters to students aiming to focus their undergraduate education in psychology while pursuing advanced studies in medicine or healthcare fields. While completing this program doesn't automatically ensure acceptance into medical or health graduate programs, it equips students with comprehensive knowledge in fundamental biomedical sciences along with behavioral and cognitive studies. Participants in this major receive instruction in analyzing behavioral and health research, effectively presenting scientific findings, and exploring current healthcare challenges in modern society. By integrating scientific approaches with the psychological and social dimensions of human behavior, this program distinctively prepares pre-med and pre-health students with essential competencies for careers in healthcare services and administration.
The BS degree mandates at least 33 semester hours in psychology courses and a minimum of 36 semester hours across biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics coursework tailored for pre-health and pre-medical students. An extra 6 semester hours in related studies introduces students to humanities and social science courses pertinent to future healthcare careers. Applicants can join the program after completing at least 16 semester hours of pre-medical sciences at Hofstra, with grades below C- in required courses not counting toward degree completion. A maximum of two courses for this major may overlap with other majors or minors.
