This program offers courses that provide a pathway to obtaining a New York state teaching certification extension in bilingual education. Designed for currently certified New York teachers across various grade levels and specialties (including preschool through secondary education, special subjects, literacy, career and technical education, or special education), the program combines classroom instruction with practical field experiences aligned with each participant's existing certification. It incorporates literacy instruction, multicultural perspectives, and technology integration throughout all coursework. The curriculum meets both National Board of Professional Teaching Standards and New York State Education Department requirements. Most students typically finish the program within eighteen months.

Qualification Requirements

Applications for admission to this advanced certificate program in the Department of Teaching, Learning and Technology are made to the Office of Graduate Admission. Students who do not fully meet admission requirements may be required to complete prerequisite courses concurrently with the completion of the program requirements. Admission is based on a comprehensive review of multiple criteria. The department understands that any single criterion may not reliably predict a student's potential for success in the program. Students may consider applying even if they fail to meet one of the GPA or testing criteria but feel that other aspects of their experience might compensate. All individual cases will be reviewed by an Admissions Counselor before being referred to the graduate program for further review.

Possession of a master's degree or higher.
A minimum overall GPA of 3.0 on all undergraduate course work, or its equivalent (e.g., a 3.0 in a completed graduate program). We encourage you to submit all transcripts from your undergraduate work and any graduate work for consideration.
New York state initial or professional certification for teaching early childhood education, childhood education, middle childhood education, adolescent education, a special subject, literacy, career and technical education, or students with disabilities in early childhood, or childhood, middle childhood, adolescent or speech and language disabilities.
