Boston University's Master of Education (EdM) in Deaf Education delivers an extensive program designed to train educators through a multilingual ASL/English methodology. This approach is rooted in the principle that every Deaf child deserves access to a natural first language, such as ASL. Graduates gain a thorough educational foundation and qualify for Massachusetts' initial licensure as Teachers of the Deaf. Core courses are conducted entirely in ASL, with interpreters and necessary accommodations provided.
The Deaf Education master's program features three specialization tracks: Early Childhood Education, Teaching DeafDisabled Students, and Teaching ASL as a First Language. Students also have the option to design a customized specialization with faculty guidance. Foundational coursework covers essential topics including deaf children's language development, ASL text instruction, curriculum design and evaluation, and promoting equity in deaf education. This full-time program spans two years, starting each summer.
