This concentration area covers the extensive domain of environmental planning, incorporating diverse professional practices that utilize multiple skill sets. Graduates often pursue careers in both government and private industry. Common environmental planning initiatives aim to balance the triple bottom line by harmonizing economic growth, social fairness, and environmental conservation through sustainable approaches. Projects may involve grassroots mobilization and job training programs, eco-friendly transit and city agriculture networks, green infrastructure planning, and environmental assessment documentation.

The wide array of environmental coursework offered at the GSD and across Harvard's institutions, particularly at the Kennedy School, Law School, and School of Public Health, demonstrates the multifaceted nature of sustainability within planning applications and academic inquiry. The Harvard University Center for the Environment (HUCE) provides a comprehensive resource guide.
