The Master in Design Studies (MDes) post-professional program at Harvard's Graduate School of Design is designed for individuals seeking to combine design expertise with skills for careers in public service, academia, NGOs, entrepreneurial initiatives, or specialized design practice.

The MDes curriculum spans four semesters of coursework without studio requirements. Candidates choose from four focus areas—Ecologies, Narratives, Publics, and Mediums—and complete foundational courses, including research methods and subject-specific classes. After establishing this core knowledge, students craft personalized academic paths by selecting courses across the GSD and other Harvard schools. In their final semester, MDes students from all focus areas collaborate on advanced research projects, applying their skills to contemporary challenges.

Unlike traditional science or humanities research, design education employs dynamic, interactive learning methods that address technical, spatial, environmental, political, economic, and global aspects of culture. The GSD's MDes program reimagines conventional education, offering unparalleled breadth and diversity unmatched by any other design institution worldwide.
