The Department of Statistics graduate program cultivates statisticians who excel not just in academic settings but also emerge as leaders across diverse fields including healthcare, legal sectors, financial markets, technological innovation, public administration, and industrial applications. Our graduate studies serve as a launchpad for thriving statistical careers, with alumni enjoying exceptional employment outcomes across academic institutions, financial institutions, tech companies, medical research organizations, economic think tanks, and policy-making bodies. Many of our PhD alumni have significantly contributed to statistical science by pioneering foundational methodologies. A distinctive strength of our doctoral program is its comprehensive approach, blending research excellence, pedagogical training, and professional growth opportunities. The department fosters investigations in both theoretical frameworks and practical applications of statistics. Our distinguished faculty spearhead cutting-edge research across diverse domains such as inferential statistics, computational statistics, missing data analysis, causal relationships, stochastic modeling, hierarchical models, experimental methodology, network analysis, and interdisciplinary connections between statistics and social, natural, and life sciences. What sets our department apart is our faculty's dual commitment to advancing statistical theory while simultaneously conducting impactful applied research that addresses complex challenges in astrophysics, life sciences, chemical processes, economic systems, engineering solutions, policy formulation, social structures, educational methodologies, and beyond. Our PhD curriculum includes two distinctive specialized courses: Stat 303 develops essential teaching techniques and statistical communication skills, while Stat 366 enhances research capabilities and scientific dissemination. Doctoral candidates benefit from extensive mentorship networks, receiving guidance from multiple faculty members beyond their primary advisors through various platforms, including the Stat 300 seminar series where qualifying exam candidates present their work to faculty for constructive feedback.

The minimum mathematical preparation for admission to graduate study in statistics is linear algebra and advanced calculus. Ideally, each student’s preparation should include at least one term each of mathematical probability and mathematical statistics. Additional study in statistics and related mathematical areas, such as analysis and measure theory, is helpful. In the initial stages of graduate study, students should give high priority to acquiring the mathematical level required to satisfy their objectives.

Successful applicants demonstrate that they understand what the discipline of statistics entails, and show evidence of involvement in applications or a strong theoretical interest. They are able to articulate a strong motivation for studying statistics.
