This program explores both ancient and contemporary populations, their languages, literary works, cultural practices, and social structures across the Near and Middle East.
The curriculum covers diverse linguistic traditions including Akkadian, Arabic, Aramaic, Armenian, Babylonian, Egyptian, Hebrew, Iranian, Persian, Sumerian, Turkish, and Yiddish. Three primary academic concentrations are offered: ancient Near Eastern civilizations, Jewish heritage and traditions, and the historical development of Islamic societies.
Students collaborate with distinguished scholars and access exceptional research materials through Harvard's library network, museums, and academic institutes. International study opportunities are available, with past programs conducted in locations such as Israel, Morocco, Turkey, Tunisia, Rome, and Germany.
Individuals who have or will have by the time of matriculation a BA, BS, or equivalent undergraduate degree (for prospective international students, a three- or four-year undergraduate degree from an institution of recognized standing) and actively seeks applicants from groups historically underrepresented in graduate schools. Applicants must receive a minimum score of 80 for the TOEFL, and it is not common for applicants to be admitted with TOEFL scores below 90. The minimum IELTS Academic score is 6.5. Some programs may require higher scores. Application Deadline: Dec 15.
