The Center for Middle Eastern Studies (CMES) serves as Harvard University's hub for interdisciplinary research on the Middle East and North Africa, fostering an active community that welcomes your involvement. Whether pursuing an AM or PhD, you'll gain access to nearly 100 annual events featuring workshops, seminars, and discussions with scholars, policy experts, and journalists. The CMES Tunisia Office provides unique support for regional research and language learning. Our PhD program allows specialization in three joint Middle Eastern studies tracks: history, anthropology, or art and architectural history. You'll collaborate with distinguished faculty from partner departments while being encouraged to explore interdisciplinary connections and develop proficiency in at least one Middle Eastern research language.

Qualification Requirements

We welcome applications from students with a demonstrated interest in Middle Eastern Studies. Strong recommendations, a compelling statement of purpose, and a writing sample are vital to a successful application. The GRE is optional, not required. Prior language training in a Middle Eastern language is not a prerequisite, although it is advantageous to one’s application. All application materials, including GRE and TOEFL scores, must be submitted to GSAS by the deadline.

Writing Sample
A writing sample is required for all applicants. It should be a standalone research essay or an excerpt from a longer piece of work and between 15 and 25 pages. If submitting an excerpt from a longer work, please provide an introductory paragraph placing the excerpt in context of the work as a whole. The writing sample should demonstrate your research skills (especially the use of primary sources), writing ability, and command of languages relevant to your proposed course of study.

Statement of Purpose
The statement of purpose should be a two-page document that presents both your general academic trajectory and specific research interests. It may include relevant life experiences (e.g., study or work abroad, acquisition of languages at home or in other non-academic settings). The statement should also refer to the Harvard faculty and programs that would fit with your research interests and career goals.
