The PhD program in Inner Asian and Altaic Studies serves as a premier hub for Inner Asian research in the U.S.
Students enjoy interdisciplinary flexibility, collaborating with faculty throughout the Faculty of Arts and Sciences to design customized study plans.
Harvard stands out as one of the rare institutions offering comprehensive Inner Asian and Altaic studies. Harvard's research centers and academic programs have significantly enriched regional scholarship. The university boasts exceptional collections of primary sources in Chinese, Iranian, Turkish, Arabic, Indian, and Russian languages, along with valuable materials in Manchu, Mongolian, and Tibetan. These resources are distributed across Harvard's specialized libraries including Widener, Harvard-Yenching, Houghton, Dumbarton Oaks, Gibb, Tozzer, and Fine Arts.
All students in the program are expected to meet the requirements of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, including a bachelor’s degree from a recognized institution, a superior undergraduate record, and reading knowledge of at least one appropriate foreign source language such as, for example, Arabic, Chinese, Manchu, Persian, Russian, or Turkish. A master’s degree in hand is advantageous.
