The Department comprises four key divisions: clinical science, developmental psychology, social psychology, and cognition, brain, and behavior. These units bring together faculty members whose shared research interests form comprehensive programs for advanced study within specific psychology subfields. Both faculty and graduate students are welcome to engage with multiple research groups. Harvard's Laboratory for Developmental Studies focuses on understanding the human mind and nature by examining their origins and progression in infants and children, while comparing these with non-human animal cognition and adult mental processes across various cultures. Ongoing research explores the development of understanding in areas such as objects, people, language, music, spatial awareness, mathematics, ethics, and the social distinctions between human groups.
