Georgia State's Advanced Standing Master of Social Work (M.S.W.) program aims to equip students for leadership positions in social work, collaborating with others to address current and emerging challenges faced by communities both domestically and globally. The M.S.W. program centers exclusively on community partnerships, following a generalist practice approach. Those specializing in Community Partnerships learn to enhance community well-being by advocating for social and economic equity and unlocking human potential. The curriculum emphasizes confronting systemic issues like poverty, violence, discrimination, and social inequalities that disproportionately affect vulnerable populations while impacting broader society. This distinctive approach allows students to examine urban social problems through a lens of justice and equity. Alumni have assumed leadership roles across diverse fields including healthcare, child welfare, nonprofit administration, and beyond.
To fulfill the M.S.W. program's objectives, the School of Social Work has established two primary goals: (1) developing students' critical thinking and communication skills for applying social work principles to community collaboration, and (2) preparing students to serve as social work leaders who strengthen and empower communities.
