The MSW program follows an advanced generalist approach, equipping graduates to work across diverse social work settings.
Instead of specializing in fields like medical or child and family social work, students gain versatile skills applicable to multiple practice areas. The curriculum provides essential advanced generalist competencies for enhancing social welfare, particularly for vulnerable groups, across sectors including education, healthcare, workforce development, housing, and justice systems. The program emphasizes hands-on practice skills in its advanced generalist training framework. Utah State University chose this model because:It aligns with USU's land-grant mission of serving diverse communities statewide
Rural Utah communities face critical shortages of MSW-trained professionals despite limited program availability
Research confirms the effectiveness of generalist and advanced generalist training for both rural and urban practice environments.
