Individuals pursue careers in social work for various motivations, yet they all share a common purpose: to create positive change for vulnerable populations. The University of Missouri-St. Louis offers a Master of Social Work program that can be completed in two years full-time or extended up to six years part-time, equipping students with professional skills to serve individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities.
During the initial phase of graduate studies, participants complete foundational coursework applicable to all practice environments and client groups. After earning 30 core credit hours, students specialize in one of two concentrations:
Family Practice, developing expertise to assist individuals and families through organizations like child welfare agencies, mental health clinics, educational institutions, healthcare facilities, domestic violence services, addiction treatment programs, or correctional systems.
Leadership and Social Change, equipping future professionals with management capabilities for leadership roles across public, private, and nonprofit sectors at local, state, and national levels.
This program cultivates the necessary expertise, practical abilities, and ethical foundation for diverse work environments including educational institutions, medical facilities, government agencies, private practices, and community organizations. Graduates emerge prepared to enhance their existing careers or embark on new paths dedicated to improving lives.
Fieldwork forms a crucial component of UMSL's MSW program, offering hands-on exposure to the realities, duties, and complexities of professional social work. With over 400 practicum options throughout the St. Louis region, students access comprehensive training experiences. Arrangements for placements beyond the metropolitan area can be considered upon application.
Instruction comes from distinguished faculty members holding advanced degrees from internationally renowned universities, combining academic excellence with practical wisdom.
