The department's Master of Arts program caters to two distinct student groups. First, it supports those pursuing the M.A. as groundwork before applying to philosophy doctoral programs. Second, it assists those who want the M.A. as their final degree to progress in their careers or prepare for other academic pursuits. Beyond the standard Philosophy M.A., the Department provides two specialized tracks: an M.A. in Philosophy focusing on empirically based philosophy of mind (the Neurophilosophy concentration), and an M.A. with a History of Philosophy concentration, tailored to help students earn an M.A. in Teaching degree at GSU and qualify to teach history and social studies in middle and high schools (grades 6-12). Georgia State boasts one of the nation's most respected terminal M.A. programs in philosophy, known for successful placements in top Ph.D. programs and an acclaimed teacher preparation initiative.
Furthermore, the department has established three key research strengths:
Social, legal, and political philosophy
Neurophilosophy and empirically grounded philosophy of mind
History of philosophy
