The Music Education faculty assesses every Music Education student before they can enroll in advanced methods courses to verify their eligibility. These requirements consist of: 1) a minimum overall GPA of 2.5, 2) at least a 2.5 GPA in all music-related courses, 3) grades of C- or better in every concentration course, and 4) a B or higher in MUS 3310 - Introduction to Music Education. Additionally, students must show teaching proficiency as judged by the faculty and exhibit professional qualities and conduct appropriate for working with children in educational settings.

Students apply for admission to the Music Education/Teacher Education program at the conclusion of MUS 3310 - Introduction to Music Education, using the form provided by the faculty. Prerequisites include finishing 60 credit hours of study, including Area A and D courses. Passing the Georgia Educators Ethics Assessment is mandatory. Further tests, such as the GACE music content exams, must be completed during the student's final semester at GSU.

In addition to meeting all other applicable requirements for admission, non-native speakers of English must demonstrate sufficient English language proficiency. This may be demonstrated by any of the following methods:
Graduation from a U.S. high school
Completion of an approved University System of Georgia (USG) campus-based English-as-a-second-language (ESL) program of study
Proof of degree completion inside or outside the U.S., where English is the official language of academic instruction
Proof of completion of the equivalent of English 1101 and/or 1102 with a grade of C or better at an accredited U.S. institution
Minimum scores on one of the following approved English-proficiency tests:
