The Music Education Division at Hartt provides one of the country's most extensive music education programs. Blending intensive conservatory instruction with a strong grounding in teaching fundamentals, this curriculum equips students for careers as K-12 music educators. Alongside core subjects like general music, choral instruction, and instrumental pedagogy (both wind and string), majors explore specialized teaching approaches including Kod√°ly, Suzuki, and Orff techniques. Undergraduates follow either a vocal or instrumental track over four years. Those passionate about jazz (saxophone, trumpet, or trombone) can opt for a dual degree in Music Education and Jazz Studies (a five-year program). Applicants for this combined program must complete both jazz and classical auditions, as they'll receive private lessons in both disciplines.
Hartt's Music Education Division maintains dynamic partnerships with local school districts. At the University of Hartford Magnet School, Hartt students gain hands-on experience teaching younger children in classroom environments and mentoring elementary students through initiatives like the Hartt Band Project and Hartt String Project. Through collaboration with Simsbury Public Schools, Hartt students instruct older elementary general music classes along with high school ensembles. These distinctive partnerships offer valuable practical experience before student teaching begins. Hartt's Music Education alumni are highly recruited for teaching positions in public schools across New England and nationwide.
