Artificial intelligence (AI) involves creating systems that exhibit human-like intelligence. Machine learning (ML), a specialized branch of AI, concentrates on designing algorithms that automatically learn from data and improve their performance without direct programming intervention.
This field investigates algorithms that analyze information, construct predictive models, and make autonomous decisions. As a fast-growing discipline within computer science, ML has become integral to the research of nearly all CSE faculty members.
CSE's AI and ML initiatives encompass core studies in deep neural networks, probabilistic modeling, large-scale learning systems, reinforcement techniques, data-based decision processes, and scientific applications. Research spans diverse applications from conventional challenges like speech recognition and image processing to innovative domains such as pandemic prediction (including COVID-19), medical diagnostics for conditions like asthma and cancer, cybersecurity threat detection, material science innovation, socially beneficial AI applications, mechanism design for collective problem-solving, and modeling complex system behaviors across social, natural, and technological spheres.
