The School of Mathematics provides an extensive doctoral program in Mathematics, along with four cross-disciplinary PhD tracks offered jointly with other university departments: Algorithms, Combinatorics, and Optimization (ACO), Computational Sciences and Engineering (CSE), Bioinformatics (BINF), and Quantitative Biosciences (QBios). Earning a PhD typically takes approximately five years, with nearly all students receiving complete financial assistance (including stipends and tuition coverage) throughout their studies. The School granted its inaugural doctoral degree in 1965. The Mathematics PhD curriculum prepares students to become academic mathematicians across various specialties, as well as research scientists in governmental or corporate settings. The majority of doctoral candidates in the School participate in this program. Mathematics PhD students have the opportunity to collaborate with any faculty member within the School.
