Our Literature and Cultural Studies program takes an interdisciplinary approach, blending close reading of primary texts with critical theory while incorporating audiovisual, historical, and philosophical viewpoints. This enables students to maximize their research potential. Faculty expertise spans traditional areas like Medieval, Early Modern, Modern Spain, Colonial Latin America, Modern Latin America, and Luso-Brazilian Studies, alongside emerging fields such as Transatlantic/Transpacific Studies and Film and Media Studies.
Both graduate programs focus on cultivating analytical, scholarly, and creative skills through intimate seminar settings, with formal teaching training as a crucial element. We actively encourage all graduate students - both domestic and international - to share their research at academic conferences and publish in peer-reviewed journals, frequently working alongside faculty members. Our department boasts an impressive track record of placing graduates in tenure-track positions at prestigious institutions across the U.S. and internationally.
In partnership with The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, we provide comprehensive support for new doctoral candidates in Linguistics and Literature and Cultural Studies. All incoming doctoral students receive five years of financial support including a stipend, health coverage, and full tuition remission.
