The Linguistics Department at Georgetown University focuses on exploring various linguistic aspects using multiple research approaches. Our faculty investigates language through structural analysis, learning processes, real-world usage, and computer-based modeling. Recognizing that comprehensive understanding requires diverse perspectives and that no single framework can answer all linguistic questions, we foster an inclusive academic environment rooted in intellectual diversity. The Master of Science program enables students to specialize in specific linguistic areas, enhancing their abilities while discovering fresh perspectives. Candidates pursue one of four specializations: Applied Linguistics, Computational Linguistics, Sociolinguistics, or Theoretical Linguistics
Sociolinguistics examines how language functions within societal settings. This concentration covers numerous research areas such as: social aspects of communication, linguistic variation and evolution, discourse studies, cross-cultural interactions, narrative research and oral traditions, identity expression through language, language contact phenomena, preservation of endangered languages and dialects, linguistic changes across lifespan, medical communication, business language applications, educational linguistics, and social dynamics in conversations.
