Qualification Requirements
Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in the U.S. or proof of equivalent education in a foreign institution.
Undergraduate degree or satisfactory subject preparation in linguistics, a language, or a related field resulting in a satisfactory grade point average (GPA). (If there is a question of sufficient background, a program of leveling courses not to exceed 12 hours will be arrived at in consultation with the graduate advisor.)
Competency in both Spanish and English (for Hispanic linguistics only).
Applicants from countries where English is not the first language are required to demonstrate English proficiency.
Three letters of recommendation.
A brief (two- to three-page) personal statement of purpose.
If you did not attend high school in the United States and your most recent institution of learning was not located in an English-speaking country, UTEP requires you to provide evidence of English-language proficiency. Minimum score 550 on the paper-based (pBT) TOEFL. Some programs require 600 or better. Minimum score of 79 on the internet-based test (iBT), and minimum of 6.5 on IELTS.
