The epidemiology program tackles health disparities as a fundamental theme across local, national, and international contexts through classroom instruction, practical experiences, and hands-on research culminating in a thesis. Students complete a series of required courses covering epidemiology fundamentals, health disparities studies, and concentration introductions before selecting one of three specialized tracks for their elective coursework and thesis focus. Our program enables students to: grasp social justice and health equity principles, identify biological, social, and economic factors influencing health disparities worldwide, gain scientific training in epidemiological theory and policy, apply epidemiological techniques to health disparity investigations, and appreciate community-based research's role in reducing health inequities while learning strategies to address disparities in prevalent health conditions.
The Social & Behavioral Epidemiology specialization equips graduate students with core epidemiological knowledge alongside expertise in social and behavioral science theories and research methods for addressing public health challenges, particularly disparities in social and behavioral health. This track develops proficiency in areas like health determinants, wellness promotion, and protective/risk factors in disease prevention. Graduates gain robust research, advocacy, and program development capabilities, preparing them for leadership roles in disease prevention initiatives and population health programs at various geographic levels.
