The Interdisciplinary Studies Major plays a crucial role in the College of Arts & Science's initiative to strengthen undergraduate research and foster cross-disciplinary solutions to challenging issues. For decades, the College has granted degrees in Interdisciplinary Studies (AB-IDST). Participants in this program craft personalized academic paths focused on significant research inquiries, receiving mentorship from two faculty members and a dean overseeing the program.
By blending methodologies and perspectives from different fields, Interdisciplinary Studies Majors tackle pressing and meaningful questions. As Peter Hans Kolvenbach, S.J., former Superior General of the Jesuits, observed, interdisciplinary work serves as the primary means to mend the fragmentation of knowledge caused by isolated disciplinary approaches. With advisor support, majors formulate their research strategies, culminating in either a conventional written thesis or an innovative creative project (subject to faculty and Program Director approval).
Students typically design their Interdisciplinary Studies (IDST) major in their sophomore year, collaborating with faculty across relevant disciplines and consulting the program's director, Dr. Bernie Cook. Applicants should have finished most Core requirements by this stage.
Successful IDST proposals must authentically bridge at least two College disciplines, with dedicated advisors from each anchoring department. The backing of relevant department chairs or program directors ensures faculty commitment to guiding students' academic and research trajectories.
