The Global Medieval Studies Program provides an interdisciplinary undergraduate major and minor (available to College, MSB, and SFS students), concentrating on the era spanning Rome's decline (5th century A.D.) to approximately 1500. This program highlights a historical and cultural timeframe where Georgetown University excels across diverse fields, including arts, music, philosophy, literature, history, theology, and regions from China to the Middle East to Europe. The 500-1500 C.E. period is not just fascinating on its own, but also a foundational era shaping modern civilization. During this time, we observe significant East-West exchanges in technology, literature, science, education, and commerce. Additionally, this period marked Christianity's expansion, Buddhism's spread across East and Southeast Asia, Hinduism's consolidation in South Asia, Islam's extraordinary rise and cultural influence, common law codification, business law and ethics development, the founding of early secular medical and legal schools, banking's invention, Aristotle's rediscovery in the West, vernacular arts and music emergence, and universities' establishment. These transformative developments continue to influence global cultures today.
