Georgetown boasts the nation's first undergraduate Arabic studies program. Mastering Arabic opens doors to comprehending 22 significant countries and more than 200 million native speakers. While some majors begin with no prior Arabic experience, others come with heritage connections, high school exposure, or overseas living experience. Our program emphasizes developing both language mastery and cultural understanding to reach advanced communication skills.
The initial five semesters feature intensive coursework designed to rapidly build proficiency. The curriculum prioritizes fluency development, sophisticated reading skills, and advanced writing and conversational abilities. Students first learn Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), the universal written language across Arab nations.
The program also provides undergraduate courses covering diverse elements of classical and modern Arabic literature, linguistics, and Islamic Studies, enabling specialized focus areas. Native speakers cannot register for introductory or intermediate language courses.
