Anthropology sets itself apart from other Social Sciences and Humanities disciplines through its deep, long-term immersion in people's everyday realities. Our program equips students to analyze and articulate the connections between culture and power across evolving local, national, and global contexts that shape lived experiences. Coursework examines contemporary challenges - including economic transformations, gender dynamics, human rights, legal frameworks, global migration, political systems, racial issues, religious practices, and social equity - through both academic study and real-world applications.
The Anthropology Department fosters a close collaborative environment where professors and students mutually educate each other. As an undergraduate program specializing in cultural anthropology, we extend learning beyond lectures through speaker series, research groups, and special events. Faculty expertise spans critical areas like human rights advocacy, legal systems analysis, environmental politics, postcolonial studies, activism, migration patterns, labor issues, religious traditions, and intersectional identities. Our professors conduct fieldwork worldwide while maintaining active roles in policy discussions, media engagements, and NGO partnerships. This blend of academic rigor and social engagement embodies what we call public anthropology - aligning with Georgetown's mission to confront injustice through scholarly understanding and practical action in our communities and worldwide.
